  1. MAO TSE-TUNG: As communist revolutionary 
  2. leader, Mao Tse-tung (1893-1976) helped 
  3. form the Chinese Communist Party in 1921. 
  4. Later, he served in SUN YAT-SEN's Kuomintang 
  5. government until CHIANG KAI-SHEK took over 
  6. and purged the government of communists in 
  7. 1928. Mao, with his fellow communist Chuh 
  8. Teh, formed the Fourth Chinese Red Army 
  9. and led them on a six-thousand-mile Long 
  10. March to SHENSI province in northern CHINA. 
  11. After a truce between Mao's communists and 
  12. Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists during World 
  13. War II, civil war broke out, with Mao 
  14. successfully driving out the Nationalists and 
  15. taking over as head of the People's Republic 
  16. of CHINA in 1949. He then collectivized land 
  17. and purged CHINA of all dissidents and non-
  18. communists during the Great Proletarian 
  19. Cultural Revolution in 1966. He ruled CHINA 
  20. until his death in 1976. (See also China article).
